Injectable Aftercare Guide: Botox, Filler and Peels

The treatment is only half of the story. What you do in the hours and days afterward has a real influence on how comfortable your recovery feels and how beautifully your results settle. Good aftercare protects your investment, reduces the chance of bruising and swelling lingering longer than it needs to, and helps your skin heal on schedule.

This guide covers the general, widely accepted aftercare basics for three of our most requested treatments: Botox, dermal filler, and chemical peels. Think of it as a friendly overview, not a rulebook. Every treatment is personal, and your injector will give you specific instructions based on exactly what you had done. When your injector's guidance differs from anything here, always follow theirs.

Why Aftercare Matters

Injectables and peels create a small, controlled amount of change in the skin, and your body responds by healing. Simple habits during that healing window help everything go smoothly. Staying calm, gentle, and patient in the first day or two gives your skin the best environment to do its work. Most aftercare is less about doing something special and more about avoiding the few things that can interfere.

Botox Aftercare

Botox and similar neuromodulators relax specific muscles over the following days. The most helpful thing you can do early on is simply leave the treated area alone and let the product settle where it was placed. Mild bumps or a little pinpoint redness right after your appointment are common and typically fade within a short time.

Botox Do's

  • Stay upright for about 4 hours after your appointment.
  • Relax your face and go about a calm, normal day.
  • Be patient. Full results develop over about 2 weeks, so do not judge your outcome before then.

Botox Don'ts

  • Do not rub or massage the treated area.
  • Skip strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for roughly 24 hours.
  • Avoid lying face-down or pressing your face into a pillow right away.

If you are still smoothing out at the two week mark and have questions, that is the perfect time to check in with your injector about a touch up.

Filler Aftercare

Dermal filler adds volume and structure, so a little swelling, tenderness, and the occasional bruise are a normal part of the process. Lips especially can swell noticeably for the first 24 to 72 hours, which can make them look fuller or slightly uneven at first. This is expected and settles as the swelling eases.

Managing Swelling and Bruising

Gentle care makes a real difference in the first couple of days. Ice applied lightly (never pressed hard) can calm swelling, and keeping your head slightly elevated while you sleep helps too. Some patients find that arnica supports bruising, though results vary from person to person. Staying hydrated and taking it easy rounds out the picture.

Filler Do's

  • Ice gently in short intervals if you feel puffy or tender.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first night or two.
  • Stay hydrated and give your body time to settle.
  • Wait about 2 weeks before judging your final result, since filler continues to integrate during that time.

Filler Don'ts

  • Avoid strenuous exercise for roughly 24 hours.
  • Postpone dental work for about 2 weeks after facial filler.
  • Do not overhandle or aggressively massage the area unless your injector specifically shows you how.

Chemical Peel Aftercare

Chemical peels renew the surface of your skin, and the recovery you see depends on the depth of the peel. Redness, dryness, and flaking or peeling over several days are all part of the normal process. The freshly revealed skin underneath is delicate, so the goal is to protect it and let it shed on its own timeline.

The Peeling Process

As your skin begins to flake, it can be tempting to help it along. Please resist. Picking or pulling at peeling skin can lead to irritation, uneven results, or marks that take longer to fade. Let each flake release naturally.

Chemical Peel Do's

  • Cleanse gently with a mild, non-irritating cleanser.
  • Moisturize to keep the skin comfortable while it heals.
  • Wear SPF every single day and reapply as directed.
  • Follow the specific instructions your provider gave you for your exact peel.

Chemical Peel Don'ts

  • Do not pick, pull, or exfoliate the peeling skin.
  • Avoid direct sun and stay out of tanning beds entirely.
  • Pause retinoids, acids, and physical exfoliants until your skin is fully healed.

A Quick Do-Not-Do-This List

Across all three treatments, a few habits are worth avoiding in the early recovery window:

  • Do not skip your sunscreen, especially after a peel.
  • Do not rush back into intense workouts, saunas, or steam rooms.
  • Do not pick at flaking skin or press on treated areas.
  • Do not compare yourself to before-and-after photos on day one. Give your results the full settling time.

When to Call Your Injector

The vast majority of recoveries are smooth and uneventful. Still, it helps to know what deserves a phone call. Reach out to your injector calmly and promptly if you notice any of the following:

  • Severe or increasing pain rather than the mild tenderness you expected.
  • Signs of infection, such as spreading warmth, redness, or discharge.
  • Any changes in your vision.
  • After filler, skin that turns white, blotchy, or unusually painful. This is rare, but it should be addressed quickly, so contact your injector right away.

You will never bother your injector by checking in. They would much rather hear from you and reassure you than have you worry at home.

These Are General Guidelines

Everything above reflects standard, widely accepted aftercare, but your care is personal. The instructions your injector hands you always take priority over any general guide, because they know exactly what you had done and how your skin tends to respond. The Injector Collective is a group of independent, licensed professionals at two open Utah locations, Lehi and Draper, and each injector tailors your aftercare to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does swelling last after lip filler?

Lips can swell noticeably for the first 24 to 72 hours, and they often look fuller or slightly uneven during that window. The swelling eases over the next few days, and your final result settles over about 2 weeks. Gentle icing and sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help.

Can I exercise after Botox?

It is best to skip strenuous exercise, saunas, and hot yoga for roughly 24 hours after Botox. Light, calm activity is usually fine. Always follow the specific timing your injector recommends for you.

What should I not do after a chemical peel?

Do not pick, pull, or exfoliate your peeling skin, and avoid direct sun and tanning beds while you heal. Pause retinoids, acids, and physical exfoliants until your skin has fully recovered. Wear sunscreen every day and follow the specific instructions from your provider.

How long until I see my final Botox results?

Botox develops gradually, with full results typically visible around 2 weeks after your appointment. Try not to judge your outcome before then. If you still have questions at the two week mark, that is a great time to check in with your injector.

When should I call my injector after treatment?

Contact your injector promptly if you have severe or increasing pain, signs of infection, any changes in vision, or, after filler, skin that turns white, blotchy, or unusually painful. These situations are uncommon, but they are worth a quick call. Your injector would always rather hear from you than have you worry at home.
