    What is IPL Photofacial?

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Photofacial uses broad-spectrum light energy to target and correct sun damage, brown spots, redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea. Unlike lasers that use a single wavelength, IPL delivers multiple wavelengths that penetrate different depths of skin to address multiple concerns simultaneously. It's one of the most effective treatments for reversing years of sun damage and achieving a clear, even complexion.

    How IPL Photofacial Works

The IPL device delivers pulses of broad-spectrum light through a handheld applicator. The light energy is absorbed by melanin (brown pigment) and hemoglobin (red pigment) in the skin. Brown spots darken and surface over the following days before flaking off. Redness and broken capillaries are coagulated and gradually absorbed by the body. The treatment also stimulates collagen production for overall skin improvement. Most patients need 3-5 sessions for optimal results.

    Am I a Good Candidate?

IPL Photofacial is ideal for patients with sun damage, brown spots, rosacea, redness, broken capillaries, or generally uneven skin tone. It works best on lighter skin tones (Fitzpatrick types I-III). Patients with darker skin tones should consult with their provider about alternative treatments, as IPL can cause hyperpigmentation in melanin-rich skin.

Frequently Asked Questions About IPL Photofacial

Is IPL the same as laser?

No — IPL uses broad-spectrum light (multiple wavelengths), while lasers use a single focused wavelength. IPL is more versatile and can treat multiple concerns simultaneously, while lasers are more targeted. Both are effective for different purposes.

    Does IPL hurt?

Most patients describe IPL as a rubber band snap sensation. It's tolerable without numbing, though we can apply numbing cream for sensitive patients. The treatment takes only 20-30 minutes of active light pulses.

What happens to brown spots after IPL?

Brown spots will darken immediately after treatment — this is a good sign. Over the next 5-10 days, the darkened spots will rise to the surface and flake off, revealing clearer skin underneath. This process is called 'coffee grounding' and is completely normal.

Can I get IPL in the summer?

We recommend avoiding IPL during peak sun exposure months or when you have a tan, as the treatment targets pigment and can cause burns on tanned skin. Fall and winter are ideal times for IPL series. Year-round sun protection is essential.
