Microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that creates thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels in the skin. These microscopic injuries are precise and superficial, but they are enough to signal your body that it is time to repair. That repair process produces fresh collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for skin that looks plump, tight, and youthful. How SkinPen Works
The SkinPen contains fine, sterile needles that oscillate rapidly to create clean micro-channels across the treatment area. This kicks off a three-phase healing cascade:
- Inflammation: the skin responds with a clotting and immune response that starts the repair.
- Proliferation: new collagen, elastin, and fresh blood vessels form to rebuild the tissue.
- Remodeling: the new tissue matures and strengthens over the following weeks and months.
Because you are stimulating your own collagen, the outcome looks like better skin, not worked-on skin. It keeps improving well after you leave the treatment room.
What Microneedling Can Improve
Microneedling is a strong choice for a wide range of concerns, which is part of why it is so popular:

One of the biggest advantages of microneedling is that it is safe for all skin types and tones, Fitzpatrick I through VI. Some laser treatments carry a risk of pigment changes on richer or darker skin, which can make them a poor fit. Microneedling works mechanically rather than with heat or light, so it treats the whole spectrum of skin tones safely and effectively. If you have been told you are not a candidate for certain lasers, microneedling is often an excellent alternative worth discussing with your provider.
What to Expect After
Before your session, we apply a topical numbing cream for about 20 to 30 minutes. Most people describe the treatment as a mild vibration or a light sandpaper sensation, with the forehead and neck being a little more sensitive. Afterward, expect redness similar to a mild sunburn for 24 to 48 hours, and possibly a little swelling or light flaking for two to three days. Most clients feel comfortable returning to normal activities the next day and can apply mineral makeup after 24 hours. Full healing usually takes about 5 to 7 days.
You will often notice an initial glow within the first week, with progressive improvement over the next 4 to 6 weeks as new collagen forms. Results build with each session. For general skin improvement we typically recommend 3 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, while acne scarring often calls for 4 to 6 sessions. Many clients maintain their results with a session every 3 to 6 months.
Combining Microneedling With PRP or PRF
